Go Eng Girl 2007

Jan 11/09

Go ENG Girl (GEG) is a provincially-run event in Ontario that aims to attract Grade 7-10 girls to engineering. At the University of Waterloo, GEG is run annually in October by the Women in Engineering Committee, within the Faculty of Engineering. During my first co-op at the University, I made the following GEG presentations for several activities that I worked on during the term. I have made these available for both those who attended the event and would like to see the presentation again, and those who are interested in learning more about the activities. Enjoy!

Slideshows are available in two formats:

1) To watch the presentations with full effects, you will need to download each Quicktime movie. This movie behaves as an interactive slideshow, ie. transitions occur as you click. Please be patient as the movies are fairly large.

2) For convenience, you can also opt to watch each presentation as a slideshow of pictures in your browser, using the JMDSlideshow V5.1 plug-in for JMDWiki. Click on the thumbnail to view the slideshow.

Wind Turbine Activity

This is a design activity where participants create and test different wind turbines designs to find a design that maximizes power output and cost. Simple household items are used as design materials (ie. toilet paper tubes, aluminum foil, popsicle sticks, straws..), and each item is matched with a price. To measure power output, connect the axle to a motor, and measure the voltage output using a multimeter. Convert volts to joules to watts.

Hydraulic Arm Activity

This is a roleplay activity where participants are hired by RoboTech Inc., a mechatronics engineering firm, to design a hydraulic limb for their new line of bots. Pre-cut wood, syringes, tubing, and adhesives are need for this activity; elastics can be used optionally to simulate human muscles. This is an original Go ENG Girl activity that has been re-done to include biomechanical applications.
