love poem (1)

written August 2006
Love's been around
since the start of the ages
when people were beasts,
and lived far from their cages.
But throughout all this time,
we've been stuck on one quirk:
What is love exactly,
and how does it work?
Love 'en francais'
might be sweeter than most,
if you were to judge
by the kiss that they boast.
The Germans write music;
the English write prose;
Romantics might send you
a beautiful rose.
But cynics say lovers are thick in the head,
and others think love is just going to bed.
Simple folk put it best when they say,
(and I quote): Love is a lot like milking a goat.
Sometimes it's hard to keep things in control;
when you're kicking and screaming,
love sure takes its toll.
But if you take a deep breath,
and don't mumble and mutter,
the love will flow out
like fresh milk from an udder.
See, love comes from the heart,
and if you don't break it,
your love will become whatever you make it.
So whether love leaves you with tears or with laughter,
I hope that you both will live happily ever after.

In retrospect, I'm not actually sure whether goats have udders..
